Whitchurch welcomed Ferndale to Hailey Park for a midday kick-off — the two sides hadn't met since the start of the previous season and both were looking forward to a good contest on a greasy surface.
Ferndale started strongly, taking the lead very early on, but Whitchurch responded well — a sharp snipe at the breakdown brought the scores level and settled the home side. The first half was lively and Whitchurch kept knocking on the door, but fortune wasn't with them: three tries were disallowed, which was a bitter pill to swallow. Ferndale's forwards continued to break the gain line with real power and added two more tries before the break to give them a lead heading into half time.
The second half was a competitive and entertaining contest with both teams trading scores — great to see Whitchurch keep playing right to the final whistle, never giving up the fight. On another day, with a kinder whistle in the first half, this could easily have been a different result. Ferndale were worthy winners and played the game in exactly the right spirit.
Well done Ferndale — we look forward to the next one. 🖤🤍
Both wingers stood out — two of the smallest players on the pitch but two of the most impactful.
